We are driven by entrepreneurship and by the energy others bring to our meeting place on Rentemestervej. We are an independent platform that brings together the democracy sector and people who simply take action. We came into being in 2022 with support from, among others, the City of Copenhagen, the Nordea Foundation, and Realdania during the crucial start-up phase, when we had a dream of creating an everyday meeting place and a hub for democracy actors and local players in the Nordvest district.
Today, we are fully self-sustaining, funded solely through rent paid by our resident organizations and through the income we generate by renting out our fantastic facilities for everything from weddings to conferences and workshops. We also run projects and larger activities in collaboration with various foundations. So when you host your event with us, you’re helping us invest even more energy into this place, create more events, and foster better innovation — all so more people can engage in democracy.
Democracy is not something we can take for granted. It doesn’t just fall into our laps. If we want a strong democracy, we have to keep developing it and strengthening democratic participation.
We need you — whether it’s for one thing, another, or something entirely different! Follow our volunteer opportunities to see where you can get involved and stay updated on what’s happening.
Learn about bread from different cultures with the Citizen Bakery, or get your hands dirty and gain knowledge about biodiversity and regenerative farming with the “Garden Club” team. Keep an eye out for our Democracy Drinks events, where you can meet others interested in democracy, or join us in celebrating democracy at election night gatherings or on Constitution Day.
We’re always on the lookout for new Garage Hosts to join our team. As a Garage Host, you play a key role in the daily operations of our venue on Rentemestervej — preparing spaces for events, helping run them smoothly, serving guests, and stepping in wherever needed.

You’re also welcome to drop by for Open Garage on the last Thursday of each month from 4–5 PM. Here, you can meet our resident organizations, who take turns hosting. For example, our partner Kooperationen offers guidance on business development for democratically organized companies.
We also offer guided tours and can give talks about the development of the space.

When you choose to celebrate an important life event with us — such as a wedding, confirmation, or milestone birthday — you’re helping support an active democratic meeting place in the city.
You can also become part of Demokrati Garage by renting one of our office spaces. As tenants, our resident organizations actively contribute to shaping the future of Demokrati Garage — for example, by helping set shared guidelines for the space through our Garage Council.

When you host your event with us, you help strengthen and support democracy — and inspire others to do the same.
At Demokrati Garage, you can strengthen your ability to participate in democracy. We have developed the concept of Democracy Fitness, which uses training exercises to enhance participants’ skills in disagreeing respectfully, listening actively, and finding the courage to stand by who they are.
A Democracy Fitness session lasts 30 minutes, during which we practice engaging in democracy together through these exercises.
Are you someone who misses meeting like-minded democracy enthusiasts, or are you simply curious about how you can engage democratically? Then you can sign up on our platform, Citizenlab. Over the coming months, we will be building a new participation-focused platform where enthusiasts, democracy advocates, and the curious can come together.
If you miss getting your hands in the soil and want to learn about permaculture and self-sufficiency, you can join Garden Club at Demokrati Garage. Garden Club is organized by Jordens Skole, which connects people who own a piece of land or a garden with those who don’t have a garden but crave getting their hands dirty.
RENTEN is a vision to strengthen the neighbourhood community around Rentemestervej and create a vibrant, healthy, and green street for everyone. Through practical actions taken together, we—neighbours and local stakeholders—can help each other reduce the pressure on our planet while increasing our well-being.
Rooted in Demokrati Garage, the aim of RENTEN is to build a street project where local actors and neighbours take ownership and act to create a better neighbourhood. The ambition is to work toward a transformation of the local area—where we live, work, and thrive in ways that meet everyone’s needs, while staying within the planet’s boundaries. Because when we take ownership of and transform our street, we have the power to transform our world.
